Although there aren't any standard ways of entering this career, most aspiring tattoo artists learn their craft through apprenticeship. To do this, they first create a portfolio pf their drawings to show an experienced tattooist, if interested, the tattoo artist may agree to take them on as an apprentice.

However, it is difficult to find an experienced tattoo artist with the time to teach an apprentice. It takes 3 years to learn the craft. This is why developing your portfolio is so important. If you can show that you put care and detail into your work, an established tattoo artist may be persuaded to take you under their wing.

As an apprentice, expect to spend a lot of time watching others tattoo while you clean up the studio and sterilize equipment. In addition to the techniques of tattoo design, you will also gain an understanding with how to deal with clients, maintain health and safety standards, and take care of business responsibilities.

The Alliance of Professional Tattooists (ATP) recommends apprenticeship for those wanting to become tattoo artists. In most cases, the ATP says that apprenticeship will cost you money and recommends that you get a contract for your apprenticeship.

Most tattoo artists have at least a high school diploma with arts credits. However, to give you an edge, it wold help to have some college courses in areas like visual arts, graphic design, or illustration. This will help you develop a portfolio of your own drawings, or flashes.

Even though there  is no standardized training to become a tattoo artist, more and more states are requiring licenses to practice. depending on the state this may involve attending a state-recognized school, obtaining health and safety training, accumulating a certain number of hours of study on hands-on training, or passing an exam.
